Changing your gender on Birth Certificates and Driver’s Licenses - we are making it easier!

Jude’s law is an important step forward for transgender rights in Colorado. The law simplifies the process to update your gender marker on a Colorado driver’s license.  It also allows you to get a new Colorado birth certificate showing the gender you identify with instead of updating your previous one.  If you want to know more about Jude’s Law please read our previous post on “The impact of Jude’s law”.

Now that we have talked about Jude’s Law, you are probably wondering how we are “moving forward” and helping make the process easier. Now our service can help create all the forms we talked about filling out by hand in our previous post.

Colorado Birth Certificate Gender Updates

Our updated Colorado Birth Certificate interview will now help the transgender community do the following:

  • Create a filled out “Sex Designation Form” as well as a “Form to Correct or Change a Colorado Birth Certificate” if you are changing your gender. This means that you will not need to fill out these forms by hand. You just have to take our interview, download the completed forms, print them, and send them in with a copy of your current driver’s license and payment. Remember: the Colorado birth certificate form will help you determine the amount and types of payment that are accepted. It also includes the address to mail the completed forms to.
  • Create a letter stating you no longer identify with the gender on your birth certificate and want to change it.  You will not need to write this letter yourself. Our interview will do it for you. Remember: If the gender change is for a minor, a parent or legal guardian will need to sign the letter for them.  Minor’s will also need to have a letter from a doctor or mental health provider verifying that they no longer identify with their birth gender. It does not need to say that they have undergone treatment of any kind. We will create both of these letters for you if you are helping a minor change their gender.

But wait, there is more! We also added a Colorado Driver’s License interview and it is ready to simplify the process for changing the gender marker on your new license.

Colorado Driver’s License Gender Updates

Our new Colorado Driver’s License interview will help the transgender community do the following:

  • Create a filled out “Change of Sex Designation” form if you are changing your gender. When completed, you just need to take it to your local DMV driver’s license office. The full list of offices can be found here.
  • Create a letter saying you no longer identify with the gender on your license and want to change it. You will need to bring a copy of your new birth certificate, this letter, and the “Change of Sex Designation” form with you when you go to the DMV driver’s license office.

Remember: if the gender change is for a minor the requirements from the Colorado Birth Certificate update also apply here.  A parent or legal guardian will need to sign the gender identification letter for the minor.  A doctor or mental health care professional will also need to sign a letter saying they no longer identify with their birth gender.

We will create both of these letters for you if you are helping a minor change their gender.
