What do the courts and other agencies charge?

There are several different fees when you file a name change petition in Colorado. These fees are in addition to any charged by our site. Most of the cost is paid to the court in a filing fee. But you will also need to pay for fingerprinting and background checks in most cases.

Please note the court does not charge filing fees for name restorations within 60 days of a divorce.

Also, fingerprinting and background checks are not required for children under the age of 14.

Name Change Petition Fees

  • Fingerprinting and background checks - $40 to $75
  • Filing your name change petition in county or district court - $88 - $238 (you can apply to have the court consider waiving this fee if you are unable to pay)
Most name change cases filed in county court can be completed for under $200

Fees to Update Other Documents

  • Fee to update the name on your Colorado birth certificate - $20
  • Fee to update your name on your Colorado driver’s license - $28
  • Fee to update your name with the Social Security Administration - Free
  • Active US Passports issued less than one year ago - Free
  • Active US Passports issued more than one year ago - $110
Most people will need to pay $48 in fees to update these additional documents.  These can be filed once your name change is complete with the courts.
